Comienza la "fiesta" en Australia, tenemos un nuevo Ciclón Tropical que ha sido bautizado con el nombre de MÓNICA. Está localizado al Noreste del país de los koalas.

A Cyclone WATCH is now current for coastal and island communities between Torres
Strait and Cooktown, and elsewhere on Cape York Peninsula north of Aurukun.

At 10pm EST, Tropical Cyclone Monica, Category 1(Escala australiana), was centred near latitude
12.6 south longitude 149.4 east, which is 550 km kilometres northeast of
Cooktown and 640 km east of Lockhart River. The cyclone is moving west-southwest
at about 10 km/h.

Tropical Cyclone Monica is expected to intensify and adopt a general westward
track over the next 24 to 48 hours. It is expected to cross the northern Cape
Yorke Peninsula coast Wednesday morning and continue to move westward into the
Gulf of Carpentaria.

People in coastal and island communities between Torres Strait and Cooktown, and
elsewhere on Cape York Peninsula north of Aurukun, should consider what action
they will need to take if the cyclone threat increases and listen to the next
advice at 5am EST Tuesday. If you are unsure about actions to be taken,
information is available from your local government or local State Emergency
Service.

The next Tropical Cyclone Advice will be issued by 5am EST Tuesday.

Ese gráfico parece decir que alcanzará categoría 3(australiana) antes de tocar tierra no?  Pues menuda racha llevan nuestros amigos australianos. En la escala que todos conocemos sería un Huracán categoría 1 pues podría alcanzar unos 65kts. No está nada mal, esperemos que no arme ninguna gorda.

Ojo que las últimas estimaciones colocan la posible fuerza de Mónica, antes de tocar tierra, en 80 nudos, es decir, a las puertas de convertirse en un Categoría 2. Como dicen por allí, está a punto de convertirse en un ciclón tropical severo

Fijaros en el mapa del modelo de trayectoria. Si es cierto que golpea tierra por ahí, estará breve tiempo en tierra y se adentrará en el golfo que hay al norte de Australia. Mal asunto porque volvería a ganar fuerza y volvería a golpear zonas del norte de Australia.


Esperemos que se dirija más al sur y así de esta manera, sus daños serán menores.

Cierto es que sería lo deseable pero desde luego la trayectoria que pronostican ahora mismo es Este/Oeste muy marcada, sin apenas componente Sur.

Muy mal ausnto, como siga esta trayectoria que le marcan ahora mismo, MONICA va a dar muchísimo que hablar. Se va a dar un paseo muy destructivo por el norte de Australia.

Además, me da la mala sensación, que cuando golpee el Noreste de Australia, lo hará con una Categoría no inferior a 4 (escala australiana).

Si tenéis el Google Earth aparecen dos webcams, la de Port Douglas se ve muy bien aunque ahora mismo es noche allí. No pasa excesivamente cerca pero ambos lugares están en alerta.

TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 4

Issued at 4:40am on Tuesday the 18th of April 2006

A Cyclone warning has been declared for coastal and island communities between
Torres Strait and Cape Flattery. A Cyclone watch extends south to Cooktown, and
elsewhere on Cape York Peninsula north of Aurukun.

At 4am EST, Tropical Cyclone Monica, Category 2 (Escala australiana), was centred near latitude
12.6 south longitude 148.5 east, which is 475 km kilometres northeast of
Cooktown and 540 km east of Lockhart River. The cyclone is moving west at about
15 km/h.

Tropical Cyclone Monica is expected to intensify and keep a general westward
track over the next 24 to 48 hours. It is expected to cross the northern Cape
York Peninsula coast Wednesday morning as a Category three Tropical Cyclone with
gusts up to 170 km/hr. Monica should then continue to move westward into the
Gulf of Carpentaria.

                     longitude 148.5 degrees east

Recent Movement    : West at 15 kilometres per hour
Destructive winds  : out to 40 kilometres from the centre
Maximum wind gusts : 130 kilometres per hour.

People in coastal and island communities between Torres Strait and Cape Flattery
should commence or continue preparations especially attempting to secure boats
and property. People in the watch area should consider what action they will
need to take if the cyclone threat increases and listen to the next advice at
8am EST Tuesday. If you are unsure about actions to be taken, information is
available from your local Police or State Emergency Service personnel. 

The next warning will be issued at 8 am EST Tuesday.

This warning is also available through TV and Radio Broadcasts; the Bureau's
website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 212.  The Bureau and the State
Emergency Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.
