El 1 de Mayo se caracteriza siempre por separar la playa de la montaña. Normalmente las estaciones de esquí cierran sus chiringuitos en este puente y por contrario se dice que hoy se inaugura la temporada de playa. Pues en Gijón comienza hoy la temporada veraniega y el famoso servicio de Salvamento. Primer día con bandera amarilla en las tres zonas de la playa de San Lorenzo

El equipo de salvamento del Ayuntamiento de Gijón inicia hoy la temporada de baños con un servicio que durante el presente mes de mayo sólo estará operativo los fines de semana y días festivos en las tres playas de la ciudad. Inicialmente el equipo estará formado por 15 personas: un jefe de servicio, 12 socorristas acuáticos y 2 socorristas lancheros. Esto supone un aumento de efectivos respecto al año pasado, en el que los retenes para esta primera etapa contaban con 13 personas.

Durante todo el mes de mayo el servicio de salvamento se prestará los sábados, domingos y festivos en las playas de San Lorenzo, Poniente y El Arbeyal, entre las 11 y las 19 horas.

Con el inicio de la temporada de baños también se pondrán en marcha los habituales teléfonos de salvamento, el 985 181 746 en San Lorenzo y el 985 181 416, en Poniente y El Arbeyal.

Más efectivos en junio

A partir del 1 de junio, el servicio de salvamento incrementará su personal para hacer frente al aumento de bañistas. También comenzará a funcionar el servicio médico, que estará operativo entre las 10.30 y las 20.30 horas. Con la nueva etapa, los horarios de salvamento en las playas se ampliarán previsiblemente como el año anterior: de 10 a 21 horas en San Lorenzo y de 12 a 19.30 horas en Poniente y El Arbeyal.

En 2005, hubo una tercera fase de la temporada de baño que entró en vigor a mediados del mes de junio y se prolongó hasta setiembre. En ese tiempo el equipo de salvamento alcanzó el máximo de efectivos en servicio, con médicos, socorristas acuáticos, lancheros y auxiliares de playa. Durante esta tercera fase los servicios de salvamento se extendieron a las playas de Los Mayanes, Cervigón, Peñarrubia y Estaño, donde funcionaron entre las 12 y las 19 horas.
