SMG-37 Defender in Helldivers 2 is a one-handed, near zero-recoil SMG that shreds swarms and drops medium threats fast, especially with a helical drum and shield for tight bot trenches and bug breaches.

I'd honestly forgotten about the SMG-37 Defender until the latest buffs dragged it back into my loadout. Now it feels like that dependable gun you can take into anything and not regret. The damage bump puts it in a sweet spot, and at 520 RPM it chews through light targets fast without asking you to wrestle the muzzle. The recoil is so low you can just track a moving head and keep firing. If you're gearing up for a fresh run, I've also seen people use U4GM to sort out Helldivers 2 items and currency quicker, which matters when you're trying to unlock kit and get straight back into drops.

Why It Plays Different

The one-handed primary thing isn't a gimmick, it's the point. The Defender lets you do stuff other primaries can't, especially on bot planets. Pair it with the Ballistic Shield backpack and you're basically walking cover. You don't have to "win" every peek. You just move up, soak the laser spam, and keep hip-firing with steady control. Devastators and Scout Striders feel a lot less scary when you can stay protected and still put rounds into their weak points. You'll notice it right away: fewer panic dives, more clean pushes, and fewer moments where you get stun-locked for trying to reload in the open.

Mods That Make It Click

Stock, it's fine, but it can feel like you're reloading at the worst possible time. The 45-round mag goes quicker than you think once a breach opens and everything's sprinting at you. The Helical Drum Magazine changes the rhythm of the gun. Seventy-five rounds means you can keep pressure on a swarm, finish a Devastator, and still have ammo left to deal with whatever flanks you. That said, you can't pretend it's a marksman rifle. Past about 40 meters, the dropoff starts to show, so you've got to commit to closer fights and use cover to close distance instead of spraying across a valley.

Loadout Habits That Actually Work

I treat the Defender as my "keep the lane clear" tool, then bring something heavier for armor. Quasar Cannon or Railgun both cover that gap, depending on what you're expecting. Against Terminids, the stagger helps a ton—Hunters don't get to chain you as easily if you stay calm and keep them in your sights. Against Automatons, it's headshots and short bursts. People get sloppy because the recoil feels forgiving, but wasting rounds is still wasting rounds. If you want a setup that lets you run, shield, shoot, and stay mobile, it's hard to beat right now, and if you're the type who likes starting strong on a new profile, checking out Helldivers 2 Accounts can fit neatly into that plan without derailing your grind.
