El vigía de las lluvias y los vientos
Con una estación meteorológica particular, Fernando Ronzón ha recopilado día tras día todos los datos del tiempo registrado en Somió desde 1994

Por mera afición. Cada dos o tres días, Fernando Ronzón coge una pequeña escalera y se sube al tejado de su casa de Somió para comprobar la correcta regulación de su estación meteorológica particular. «Si quieres fiabilidad, es fundamental hacer un buen mantenimiento». Y con plena fiabilidad, este aficionado a la aeronáutica y la navegación lleva once años recogiendo día tras día cada fenómeno meteorológico que sucede en Gijón, a 43 grados latitud Norte y 5 grados longitud Oeste.

Empezó a aficionarse al mundo de las mediciones mientras se preparaba para obtener la licencia de piloto, para la que tuvo que estudiar meteorología. También cuando quiso prepararse para capitán de yate. Ahora aprovecha cualquier oportunidad para acercarse a las bibliotecas universitarias en busca de libros sobre la materia. «Cuando vivía en Oviedo ya monté una pequeña estación, pero que funcionaba de una manera más manual; tenía que ir midiendo, probando la calibración de los aparatos...».

En Somió cuenta con un equipo más sofisticado que le permite recoger en tiempo real todos los datos sobre precipitaciones, temperaturas, radiación solar y velocidad y dirección del viento, entre otros aspectos, que le han permitido crear en internet una extensa 'enciclopedia atmosférica' de Somió, que recoge todas las incidencias sucedidas desde noviembre de 1994. Su estación meteorológica, que cuenta con anemómetro, barómetro, pluviómetro y sensor de rayos ultravioleta, envía mediante radio o línea ADSL toda la información a un ordenador, donde cada diez minutos se actualizan los registros de la base de datos. «Lo principal no es tomar muchos, sino que sean buenos», explica.

Y buenos parecen ser unos datos que cada día reciben a través de la red cerca de 500 consultas. Algunas de ellas muy curiosas, como señala el propio Fernando: «Uno de los visitantes más asiduos, que suele entrar en la página todos los días, está registrado en Varsovia. No sé si será que hay alguna pescadera de Cimadevilla viviendo por allí».

Fernando insiste en que su labor no es predictiva, sino meramente documental. «Me limito a recoger datos. Para hacer predicciones, salvo algunos comportamientos que son evidentes y muy previsibles, se necesitan datos de los satélites meteorológicos, que te permiten ver la situación de la atmósfera más allá del nivel de superficie». En cualquier caso, reconoce que en una región como Asturias «es muy difícil acertar con las predicciones, porque igual sales con sol de Oviedo y al llegar a Villaviciosa hay una tormenta tremenda».

Su base de datos, sin embargo, sirve de importante ayuda para decenas de personas, que no solo están interesadas en conocer el estado real del tiempo en Somió sino algún dato concreto de los últimos años. «Me escriben muchos estudiantes de Ingeniería que para sus trabajos necesitan saber, por ejemplo, las precipitaciones que hubo en Gijón en un día concreto, o la tendencia en los últimos años de las temperaturas de un mes equis».

Fernando Ronzón alerta contra las decenas de aficionados «que empiezan a recoger datos y al poco tiempo lo dejan», y señala que esta labor de 'vigía de las nubes' «es muy esclava, porque incluso en vacaciones tienes que estar pendiente de que no se ensucien los aparatos o se cuelgue el servidor».

Como pequeño consejo, recuerda que no es lo mismo situar la estación en una zona aislada como Somió, que hacerlo en pleno centro de Gijón. «En un tercer piso en pleno centro, los datos del anemómetro no serían reales, y el termómetro se vería afectado por el calor de las 36.000 estufas de la ciudad».

En pleno debate sobre la sequía y el cambio climático, se despide con un dato. El mes más lluvioso de los últimos once años fue noviembre de 1996, con 259 litros por metro cuadrado, y el más seco marzo de 1997, con 1,8 litros. Al menos, en Somió.
