Un gran segmento de lo que los científicos creen que una vez formó parte del suelo oceánico ha sido detectado cerca del núcleo de nuestro planeta. El descubrimiento apoya la teoría de que que la corteza de la Tierra está siendo constantemente destruida en las profundidades del planeta como material fundido y que simultáneamente sube hacia arriba para regenerar la superficie.
La estructura tiene casi 200 km de profundidad y al menos otros 200 de ancho y casi 450 km en dirección norte sur.
"Imaginemos miel cayendo sobre una tostada, podemos observar las ondulaciones y acumulaciones de esta, algo muy parecido es lo que creemos estar viendo en la base del manto" afirmaba Alex Hutko, un estudiante graduado de la universidad de California y autor de esta tesis.
Este segmento parece que comenzó su viaje hacia el centro de la tierra hace 50 millones de años, es más denso que el material que le rodea, por lo que esta hundiéndose. Su parte inferior está muy próxima al núcleo, a más de 2000 kilómetros de profundidad, pero aún sigue unida con la superficie como en una especie de cinta transportadora.
A lo largo de la costa este de Norteamérica la corteza oceánica se hunde bajo la corteza continental, creando zonas de terremotos y volcanes. Los geólogos han especulado durante mucho tiempo que cuando la corteza se hunde bajo el manto desplaza material y lo fuerza a que suba hacia arriba.

"Dado que se debe cumplir el principio de conservación de masa en el manto, algo debe volver hacia la superficie, este material que asciende son las plumas de material caliente que llegan a producir volcanes y zonas hidrotermales.
Si los científicos han interpretado correctamente estos datos, este segmento la corteza es la primera evidencia de que la corteza se hunde desplazando el material hacia arriba mientras que esta se adentra hacia el interior del planeta.
Este segmento fue encontrado monitorizando ondas sísmicas generadas por terremotos en Sudamérica, que reflejaban el interior del manto.
La corteza que se hunde estar compuesta esencialmente del mismo material que el manto inferior, afirman los investigadores, pero es mucho más fría, alrededor de unos 1800°C. El manto inferior suele duplicar esa temperatura.
Las ondas sísmicas son alteradas mientras se mueven entre regiones calientes y frías, lo que permite a los programas informáticos generar una imagen de este segmento. Es posible según afirma el principal investigador, que sólo estemos viendo una formación de roca en el manto, que tiene una composición química distinta, pero la temperatura con tantas diferencias tiene su mejor explicación si la entendemos como resultado del hundimiento de la corteza.
Está técnica de análisis de ondas sísmicas también ha revelado plumas de material caliente en los niveles inferiores de este segmento.
